  1. Praying for you this week! Definitely going to miss you at Jr. GAP! Could have used your help with the girl/guy talk–but so glad you can be there. I can’t wait to hear about how it went for you.

  2. Hey all~
We are safe and sound and busy packing for the medical clinic. Yesterday was a long day, but finally crawled into bed at 1:15. We are heading out to a coastal village soon a couple hours away. The guys were busy getting vehicles working this morning so we have 4-wheel drive and busy packing meds.

RVCS- glad to hear that school is okay and you are surviving without me. I can’t wait to tell you all the stories from this week!

Kaylee and Levi- Have fun today! Miss you already! I hope you are both feeling better! We love you guys!

Mom and Dad- hope you are still surviving and day 2 goes just as well as day 1!

Thanks for all the prayers! So excited to see what God has in store for the week!

  3. Glad you made it safely and yes day 2 is going great-went to library and Grandma Mary already today and later going swimming. Alex and Jordan came last night to sit in the hot tub with the kids.
Kaylee-I miss you but I am having fun at Grandma. I love my new bed and am sleeping in it. I hope you love my surprise.
Levi-I want to sleep up high 🙂
Take care and no worries-kids are doing great and feeling better.
    Love Ya!!

  4. Well now that it is 12:45am we have arrived back at base after our 3 hour trip. We went “off roading” and went to the very end of the road literally- to get to the village tonight. It was an adventure to say the least. The medical clinic went great and lots of good things happened. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store.

Kaylee- I love your surprise you silly girl! Love you babe.
Levi- I hope you had fun swimming tonight!

  5. Hey everyone~
I will try to write again now that I have had some sleep. There is something about walking out of your bedroom in the morning and seeing the mountains all around you. Absolutely amazing! Yesterday we went to San Ramon which is a coastal village about 3 hours away and only 10 miles from the coast. We then went off on a dirt road and climbed up and around the mountain. We were on this road maybe an hour until the road ended and we were at the village. So, yes literally at the end of the road. We had one vehicle overheat on the way as we climbed over rocks and drove through streams. That was the only set back and with our 4-wheel drive vehicles we made it. The guys said that the road was worse than the 4-wheeling trails in the Black Hills if that tells you anything. The village had about 60 families that we saw and gave meds too. We also played with the children. We made bracelets, fixed puzzles, played frisbee, jumped rope, soccer, and so much more. They love their dulce- candy. We then showed the Jesus film and Hermano Jesus gave a short message. Many people of the village gave their life to Christ last night and it was awesome to witness that and be a part of it. Tonight we are heading to another village not quite so far away. Thanks for all the prayers!

  6. Good morning Kaylee and Levi, Mom and Dad~
Glad to hear that everyone is feeling better and having fun. I hope you 2 sat in church nice for grandpa and grandma. The weather here is great, and we are having a great time. Staying healthy so far. Have a great day and I will check in again soon!
    Love you guys!
    Mommy and Daddy 🙂

  7. Kaylee-Thank you for letting me stay at grandpa and grandma-I am having fun. I did the lily pads all by myself at the pool last night. I love you to the moon and back th stars and back and the sun and back.
    Levi-It snowed a little-I want my present 🙂
Kids are doing great. Sleeping good at night and naptime-not sure how daycare will go with me bringing but we will find out..
Glad you are doing good-may you be a blessing being the hands and feet of Jesus.
    Love You!!!!

  8. Another great night at the medical clinic tonight. And we were back by 9:15! Awesome! So I guess it is to bed on time tonight as we will be up at 5:30 to go build tomorrow. We are building the houses in La Reina which is about an hour away. The medical clinic tonight was a 2 hour drive, but we only went about 7 or 8 miles. We had to go around the mountain and twist and curve to get there. The kids loved all the gifts we had for them- clothes, toys, colors, balls, stickers, nail polish- we even made bracelets with them and they loved that! It was another great night with many people giving their lives to Christ. There is just something about singing “Oh Glorious Day” and “Great is Thy Faithfulness” from on top of a mountain- absolutely amazing!
And Clay- we are on the same time zone as Iowa.
Levi- I met a little guy today that was also 2 years old. His name was Hosbe. He definitely grabbed my heart and reminded me so much of you. We played catch, and he was just too cute 🙂
Kaylee- I gave your doll to a little girl today- I took a picture for you. She loved it! You made her a very happy little girl:) I’m proud of you! Love you guys!
Hope all is well back in Iowa. Life here is wonderful- no distractions or as much stress- such a different way of life here.

  9. Hi this is april the class misses you A LOT I hope you’re having a great time. 🙂

  10. Today was another great day in the village of La Reina. Our morning began at 5:30 am. It was very hot and we worked in the direct sunlight all day. We are all a little redder than we were this morning 😉 We put up the metal stud walls, put up sheet rock, put up the cement board on the outside, mud and taped twice, and then called it a day. The house is about 12×12. I am on the team building a house for a single mother and her 2 year old daughter. The heat didn’t sit so great with me today and I felt pretty yuck for awhile, but felt much better after a shower and lots of water. We got back to the base at about 4 and then I headed down to the orphanage after cleaning up. WOW- those little ones melted this girl’s heart. There are about 6 one year olds and a 4 month old baby. They are absolutely precious. Their background stories break my heart. I would take one home in a heartbeat. tomorrow we will be back at the houses- painting and putting stucco on the outside- a fun and messy job. Thanks for all of the prayers- I really appreciate it! Prayers for health as some team members aren’t feeling well and another productive day tomorrow would be great!

Kaylee and Levi- have Grandma and Grandpa give you a big hug from us! I miss you little peanuts, but know that you are having a ton of fun with grandpa and grandma. Have fun with Evie and Grandma tomorrow. Love you guys!

  11. Reading your posts makes me so jealous! It sounds like you are having an amazing week. And my heart would melt for those kids too. Praying that God is showing you the depth of His love!

  12. Glad you are feeling better-take care of yourself.
Kaylee-Dear mommy and daddy-I miss you forever, I am going out for pizza tomorrow with Alex and Jordan-its going to be sooo much fun.
    Levi-love you
Funny story-I tucked Kaylee in last night and she said I love you to the moon and back, the stars and back and the sun and back. I say I love you around the world and with all my heart. She is quiet and is thinking and than replies does that mean you love me as much as I love you and I say yes.Kaylee says good than its all good 🙂
We pull up to Lisa this morning and Levi says Grandma I’m not getting out of the car-they both did good though.
Have a great day tomorrow and I will help you take care of a few of those babies if you want to sneak them home 🙂
We are having lots of fun with the kiddos and I am already worried about missing them like crazy next week.
    Love you!!

  20. Today was another very warm day in Guatemala. Up at 5:30 and ready to roll. We went and continued on our houses today. We finished mudding and sanding, put the porches on, the window in, and the doors in. We also stuccoed the outside and got pretty messy. Tomorrow we get to paint the inside and dedicate the houses. Please be praying for the hearts of the families that they would be open to the message of Jesus Christ that we will present to them. The children in the village are so helpful and want to help with anything that they can. Too cute. These people live in things that we wouldn’t even consider living in, and they are so happy despite the very little that they do have. In America we are so centered around technology and having the latest things, when why don’t we sit back and enjoy what God has given to us? It really makes you think about things differently and step back and think about your life. I could really get use to the simplicity of life here in this country and waking up to the sight of mountains every morning. Simply beautiful.
This afternoon we came back and worked on miscellaneous projects around the base. We are now getting ready for some supper – Dominoe’s pizza and pop 🙂 – that has never sounded so good in my life!

Students- I miss you guys too and have so many stories to share with you! I hope all is going well.

Mom- glad to hear that all is going well. Can’t wait to hear all their stories from their week. I’m sure they will talk about it forever. Thanks so much for all you do! Love you guys!!
PS Could you tell me what happened on the Bachelor? 🙂 Thanks!

  21. So glad you are enjoying your week-sounds like you are getting lots accomplished and sharing Gods love. The kids loved there surpise candy bouquet today especially since it got delivered to the house. I loved the flowers also-thanks 🙂
Jackie and Robyn went home-Tierra makes a scene tonight and goes to hospital-for attention.
Enjoy your last few days! Love ya tons !!!!!

  23. Hey Mrs. Dykstra, How is Guatemala? Hope you are having a fun time! I wish you were in Rock Valley to see all the crazy outfits this week so far.

  24. Kaylee says thank you for my surprise-I love it. I made a surprise for you today at daycare.Love you mommy and daddy-I miss you and want to cuddle with you but grandma is doing a good job cuddling with me.
Daniella,Selma and Sarah last night 🙂

  25. God is good all the time!! And all the time God is good! What a great day in Guatemala once again. Today we went and got to paint the inside of our houses and put on the roofs. This is when we got to personalize the houses and make them a home. We each wrote a different verse inside our houses and painted some pics for them. I worked on the Hope house so we put Jeremiah 29:11 in our house. There was some miscommunication earlier this week and the mother of our house was married with a one and 3 year old and the grandmother was also going to live with them. This afternoon we dedicated the houses. The team that built that house goes in with the family and the rest of our team gathered around the house and surrounded it with prayer. We presented them with gifts and then the gospel. The grandmother in our home was so overwhelmed with the gifts that she ended up fainting. Dan (the missionary) said that it was a spiritual battle going on within her as well. She was in a wheelchair. She got real limp and slid completely out of her wheelchair to the ground. I was sitting right there and helped the father hold her up. It was such an emotional experience, and amazing at the same time. The father rededicated his life today and the mother and grandmother both received Christ for the first time. That is such an amazing thing to be a part of. They now have the gift of eternal life, and there is no greater gift than that. We dedicated all 5 houses this afternoon, and even though some were hesitant, they all accepted Christ. There were 2 fathers that didn’t show up for dedication and we fear they are running from the Lord. Lots of prayers for them would be appreciated! Once again I am remined of how blessed I am to have been raised in a Christian home and be surrounded by Christian family and friends.
Tomorrow hopefully we are not up at 5:30 🙂 Tomorrow we will be working around the base and then heading into Antigua to the market. Hopefully I can sneak in a little snuggle time in the orphanage as well. 🙂

Kaylee and Levi- Hope everything is still going well with you guys! We are having a great time but missing you two like crazy! Can’t wait to see you in 2 days! Love you guys!

  26. Absolutely amazing, Amamnda. What a thrill to be used by the Lord. The Lord keep blessing you all.

  27. Hola mi amigos! I am ready to be back in the comforts of life, but not ready to say goodbye to the beautiful people of Guatemala, the team members, and this amazing country. I can’t wait to have my kiddos in my arms! Today we worked around the base, I soaked up the sweetness of the kiddos in the orphanage, and then we went to the market. Another great day! Tomorrow will be another long day of travel, so please be in prayer for safety. We will be leaving base at 3:30am to head to the airport. My prayer is that as we leave this place, that we will all continue to be used by the Lord and continue to be a missionary back in Iowa as well. I pray that I will continue to see God’s blessings each and every day in the little and big things and continue to be used by Him in all that I do. Thanks for taking this journey to Guatemala with me and for all your prayers! The Lord is doing mighty things and I can’t wait to see what He has in store!

  28. Mom- we should be back in Houston around 10 and then we will head through customs. I will touch base then! Give the kids a big hug for us and can’t wait to see you all tomorrow and share all the God stories from this week.

8th graders- Hope you had a fun spirit week and a great day at the Outdoor Campus. Bummed I missed out but can’t wait to hear all about it. Good luck against the teachers tomorrow in the big volleyball game. You are lucky that I won’t be there 🙂
